What is the purpose of health education? While definitions abound to describe the purpose of health education, many educational programs place an emphasis on the reduction/prevention of disease or death. While it is important to reduce poor health outcomes, there is an increased emphasis on ensuring that health education and promotion practices build the capacity of individuals to be “healthy”. To do this, requires an emphasis on flourishing and applying principles that advance the health and well-being of young people. With the release of the 2023 Accelerated Action for the Health of Adolescents (AA-HA!) from the WHO, a renewed global conversation is necessary to ensure that school-based health education is grounded in approaches that support the development of health and well-being. A discussion, based in salutogenic principles, will include opportunities to reflect on pedagogies (e.g. skills-based, humanizing, culturally responsive/sustaining) and practices that can improve well-being and thriving for students in school settings.
