Background: Self Determination theory is a framework for understanding the conditions that elicit, support and sustain motivation for learning. Similarly, Cooperative learning aims to engender positive outcomes whereby students work together in structured, heterogeneous groups, to accomplish common goals.
Aim: A 7 week intervention using an SDT informed model of Cooperative learning to develop students’ autonomy, competence and relatedness.
Sample: 120 Y6 students in an International school setting
Method: Pre and post intervention Questionnaires were used to measure students’ Relative Autonomy Index (RAI) levels. Semi structured interviews were conducted post intervention to gauge students’ perceptions of their Cooperative Learning experience.
Results: Statistically significant results were observed across two domains: External Regulation and RAI in the intervention group. The Results triangulated with the thematic analysis from the qualitative data.
Conclusion: This study has demonstrated the utility of this approach for PE and classroom based interventions to develop student motivation
