As PE curriculums continue to evolve from the mastery of movements to holistic problem-solving, ‘adaptive tools’ offer a movement alphabet that can align with the learning objectives of different modules, cultivating diversity, equity, and inclusion on the path to physical literacy and multisensory integration. This practical workshop will include hands-on demonstrations for project-based movement tasks that activate problem solving affordances, showcasing specific tools like the practice ball, cotton belts, and wooden sticks. This approach allows participants to engage dynamically with their bodies, enhance their confidence, search for creativity, and explore various degrees of freedom in movement, while highlighting the importance of adaptability in skill acquisition.
Rooted in complex systems theory, understanding movement variability and rhythm is probably the most valuable asset for a healthy movement development. Aside from tools and sport-specific skill acquisition, adapting the learning design and task constraints allows for the creation of an endless variety of games that enhance dexterity, reinforce perception-action feedback loops, and build confidence for lifelong movement in physical activity. In this session, you will not only take away unique movement games that can be implemented immediately, but you will also learn the methods, concepts, and research that support their applications, enabling you to create your own dynamic and energetically efficient movement configurations.
