This workshop explores strategies for creating more inclusive, play-based activities in Physical and Health Education (PHE) that foster student connection, engagement, and equitable participation. Utilizing DEIJB resources and professional learning; we have engaged in an audit of our PHE programs and have made a variety of practical modifications to create more inclusive activities, foster a sense of belonging within PE, and build a purposeful and connected PE community.
Workshop participants will engage with the theory and practice of building a more inclusive PE program and specific teaching practices. This includes team-building, grouping methods, social experiments, leveraging assessment criteria, building PE-specific self-efficacy, and authentic modifications to games. The aim is to make PE an accessible, enjoyable, and valuable learning experience for all students, not just the students who typically thrive with PE.
There will be physical activity (wear PE clothes if you like) involved in this workshop, as well the examination of theory, and rich discussion. If you would like to bring a unit to this workshop, feel free to do so, though it is completely optional. We intend to give participants an opportunity to reflect on their own programs and collaborate in the development of practical strategies to bring back to our respective schools.
