This session has been presented as a 60 min feature (lecture style) to over 100 participants (ACHPER, Victoria, Australia, November 2024), in a 20 min oral presentation to academics (TGfU, 8th International conference, Auckland, NZ, December 2024) and in a 70 min interactive workshop (Discovery, Peak Phys Ed, Victoria, Australia, February 2025).
Learning objectives:
- To understand the current assessment practices of a population of Victorian secondary PE teachers (Levels 7-10)
- To critically examine assessment practice
- To explore the potential use of an assessment framework
The session provides an overview of David’s recently completed PhD research into the assessment practices of Victorian secondary school PE teachers. The research centred on the focus area of games and sports within the Victorian Curriculum (VC), Health and Physical Education (HPE), specifically, the category of invasion games and sports. The session will provide an outline of the four studies comprising his thesis, with a focus on the findings and recommendations for assessment in this context. Participants will be invited to critically examine their assessment practices, including their use of: (1) evidence-based assessment tools; (2) assessment for learning; (3) self and peer-assessment; and (4) rubrics. Participants will be introduced to the Invasion Games Assessment Framework (IGAF). This conceptual framework is underpinned by evidence-based tools located in the games’ assessment literature and the views of a population of Victorian secondary school PE teachers. The framework was purposefully designed to align with game-based teaching approaches and the VC: HPE (Levels 7-10).
