Karen Heng

Karen is an educator and a fitness enthusiast. Her extensive background in dance, gymnastics and physical education has provided her with a strong foundation to teach movement education. After graduating from the National Institute of Education in 1994, Karen went on to pursue her undergraduate studies at Loughborough University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physical Education and Sports Science. Her commitment to lifelong learning saw her attain her Masters in Education (Development Psychology) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, showcasing her determination to continually enhance her skills and expertise. Throughout her professional journey, Karen has taken on significant roles such as Head of Department for Physical Education, Co-curricular Activities and Aesthetics and Head of Department for Character, Citizenship and Education. These leadership opportunities provided many insightful experiences that have helped to shape her beliefs and approach towards the holistic development of students. Currently serving as a teaching fellow at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Karen takes pride in sharing her experience and expertise in dance, gymnastics and fundamental movement skills. This is a testament to her specialized knowledge and her dedication to helping both pre and in-service teachers understand the importance of movement education. Her unique insights in these areas allows her to enhance teachers’ kinesthetic awareness and appreciation for movement, ultimately benefitting the students they instruct. Karen’s commitment to lifelong learning is evident in her recent accreditation as a Polestar Pilates Studio Instructor and Hatha Yoga Instructor. These certifications reflect her desire to expand her skill sets and provide an additional dimension for improving mobility and fitness through movement education. In staying true to her commitment to practice what she preaches, Karen strongly believes that one is never too old to learn. With this, she continues to actively engage herself through artistic gymnastics training to maintain her form and fitness as a practitioner.
