Course Overview

This entry-level course, the  SWIM Australia™ Teacher (SAT), has the competence and knowledge to teach swimming and water safety to independent learners from ages 2.5 years upward, emphasising safety, fun, and skill development.

The skill set SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher provides the skills and knowledge required to assist individuals in gaining the competencies required to deliver water-related personal safety and survival lessons as determined by the federal government.

Upon completing all the course requirements, candidates will be accredited with the SWIM Australia™ Teacher license, valid for three years. The course includes vocational education training requirements and non-accredited training requirements in line with the Aquatic Industry. This is the industry standard for Teachers of  Swimming and Water Safety.

This course is aimed at people entering the aquatics and community recreation industry, wishing to instruct swimming and water safety and the entry point into Sport, Aquatics and Recreation industry.

Note: It is not compulsory to register for the main PHASE Conference to attend this two day workshop.

This interactive course is delivered in a blended format with online theory and practical components.

The practical workshop requires attendance at a face-to-face training session for a full day. Students will also be required to complete supervised industry training in a swim teaching environment in a range of conditions.  The course consists of theory, practical and supervised practice components:

    • CPR certification can be completed after the workshop itself. Evidence of CPR certification needs to be submitted to Swim Australia via their online portal to receive the Swim Australia Certification.
    • Online theory assessment: ~30 hours of online study with short quizzes after each module.
  • SWIM Australia™ Teacher Course

    14-15 November 2026

    Practical workshop assessment: an 8‑hour practical sessions that qualified Swim Australia Trainer will deliver during the conference on 14-15 May 2026.

    • Accumulative Training Record: participants must submit a completed record of required tasks with signatures. Signatories may include the School Principal, Athletics Director, or Aquatics Director/Coordinator/Manager at the participant’s school. Swim Australia may also request a video of a participant teaching on the pool deck as additional evidence of teaching and competence.
    • Sport Integrity Australia online course: approximately 1 hour.
