BWF Coach Education Level 1 Course

A collaboration with Badminton World Federation (BWF)

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) in collaboration PHASE will deliver the BWF Coach Education Level 1 Course.   

The Level 1 course prepares candidates with basic badminton experience (including Shuttle Time teachers looking to advance their skills) to plan and deliver linked coaching sessions for badminton and/or Para badminton. 

Contents cover basic coaching principles, basic coaching methodology, and introductory elements to technical, tactical, physical and psychological work with badminton players.

Level 1 is the foundational course then continues onto level 2 and 3 and beyond that specialist courses and tutor courses.

Coach Education Level 1 Criteria

  • Motivated candidates with basic knowledge and experience of badminton
  • 18 years old at start of course

Course Format

The course format for PHASE is designed for busy educators. Normally a five day face-to-face course, we have developed a special three day face-to-face program (normally Friday, Saturday and Sunday) that has a mandatory pre-course online component. 

  • Global Recognition

    This qualification is globally recognized across 203 countries, opening up coaching opportunities worldwide.

Pre-course Tasks (Mandatory Pre-course Online Component)

The candidates on the course should come prepared. Those registered for the course should:

  1. Complete the Coach Education Level Online Component (link) and Shuttle Time Online Component (link) and email the certificate of completion to PHASE two weeks prior to the course.
  2. Be familiar with the syllabus and technical content of Coach Education Level 1 Manuals &  Coaching Framework.
  3. Investigate about badminton in the area or region where they will deliver badminton lessons – schools, clubs, communities, sport facilities, equipment.
  4. Know about badminton in the area – national, regional, local badminton association – how it is structured, the key contacts for the national body.
  5. Know about badminton competition for schools regional or nationally.
  6. Be aware if there are children in their environment who have disabilities and who may benefit from the inclusive variations that Coach Education Module 13 offers.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the training course, the coaches will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate basic coaching competencies through effective planning, delivery, review and evaluation of linked coaching sessions. 
  • Safely manage group activities.

About the Instructor

A former national badminton player and chief coach, Yong Joo has devoted his career to advancing sports excellence and coaching. As a BWF Tutor, he contributes to the international badminton coaching community. Currently Team Lead for Performance Coaching at CoachSG, he partners with National Sport Associations to drive coaching strategies and leads Singapore’s Coach Developer initiative. His journey from athlete to coach developer gives him a unique perspective to impact performance sport.
