Grounded in student agency research, Dr. Albert Bandura’s work on self-efficacy, and Dr. Carl Rogers’ humanistic approach, the session shows PE and sport educators how to shift from telling students how to behave and feel to co-constructing those outcomes with them. When students help name what resilience, teamwork, leadership, or perseverance look like in their own words, they build the self-belief and ownership Bandura identified as central to sustained behaviour change—and the unconditional positive regard Rogers argued is essential for genuine growth.
Participants will leave with a practical structure for:
- Co-constructing SEL outcomes with students rather than prescribing them
- Building simple, student-authored self-assessment tools for ongoing reflection
- Shifting the teacher’s role from evaluator to collaborator in a student’s social-emotional growth
