Assessment in Physical Education (PE) has traditionally been associated with evaluating students’ performance and achievement of learning outcomes. In Singapore schools, there is growing emphasis on strengthening the formative role of assessment so that evidence of learning is used not only to evaluate achievement, but also to actively support and advance student learning.
This presentation examines how formative assessment can be meaningfully embedded within PE lessons through teacher, self and peer assessment. Practical strategies include communicating clear learning intentions and success criteria, purposeful questioning and observation, actionable feedback, rubrics and checklists, self-reflection and peer feedback. These practices enable teachers and students to gather evidence of learning, recognise current performance, identify areas for improvement and determine appropriate next steps.
Importantly, formative assessment positions students as active participants in assessment. By interpreting success criteria, evaluating performance, using feedback and reflecting on progress, students can develop greater assessment and feedback literacy, engagement, agency and ownership of their learning. Teachers can concurrently use assessment evidence to make responsive pedagogical decisions and provide appropriate challenge and support for students with different levels of readiness.
Drawing on practices in Singapore schools, the presentation will include hands-on sessions where participants experience and apply selected formative assessment strategies in practical PE contexts. Participants will leave with practical, adaptable strategies and tools for integrating teacher, self and peer assessment into their own lessons, supporting more participatory, responsive and learning-centred assessment practices.
