With increasing global mobility, Physical Education classrooms are becoming more culturally complex than ever. This session explores the experiences of third culture students, young people who grow up between multiple cultures, and how their diverse understandings of masculinity and femininity shape participation in PE.
Drawing on qualitative research conducted in an international school in Singapore, this presentation highlights student experiences of transition, identity, and belonging, and how these can influence behaviours such as engagement, work avoidance, and peer interactions.
The session will unpack how differing cultural perspectives can contribute to social hierarchies, exclusion, and misunderstandings in PE settings.
More importantly, it will provide practical strategies for teachers to create more inclusive, supportive environments that challenge stereotypes and promote equitable participation for all students.
