This 60-minute interactive workshop demonstrates how the Elementary PE team utilises Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to make Physical Education more inclusive and personalised, while intentionally developing IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills. Participants will explore practical routines for goal-setting, reflection, and student choice so learners can engage in different ways, demonstrate learning through multiple formats, and develop stronger self-management, social, and thinking skills through meaningful PE challenges.
This workshop invites educators to explore how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can enhance Physical Education by making learning more inclusive, personalised, and skill-driven. Through a highly practical challenge-based approach, participants will see how UDL’s three core principles (multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression) can be intentionally aligned with IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills to support every learner in PE.
Rather than treating skill development as “extra,” this session positions ATLs as the language and structure that make personalisation visible. Participants will examine how choice, scaffolds, and flexible pathways in PE can directly develop self-management (goal-setting, perseverance, reflection), social skills (collaboration, communication, empathy), and thinking skills (strategy, problem-solving, decision-making). Through interactive activities, educators will experience how students can set personal performance goals, monitor progress, and use self and peer-assessment routines to take ownership of their learning, while still meeting PE outcomes.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical, adaptable strategies that connect UDL planning to ATL skill-building in PE, helping create learning environments where every student can participate meaningfully, demonstrate growth, and feel valued.
