Jump rope is often seen by students as a basic or outdated activity. However, when intentionally structured, it can become a powerful tool for creativity, collaboration, and student ownership.
In this highly practical and active workshop, participants will experience how a jump rope unit can shift student mindset from reluctance to curiosity by combining inspiration, strategic modeling, and structured exploration.
Using a “monkey see, monkey do” approach, this session demonstrates how simple, accessible skills can quickly evolve into engaging choreography tasks where students design, experiment, and perform movement sequences in small groups. Participants will explore how to scaffold progression from individual skills to partner work and group rope challenges while maintaining high engagement in large classes.
The workshop will highlight strategies for:
- Raising the perceived ceiling of simple activities through inspiration and modeling
- Lowering the entry barrier so every student can experience immediate success
- Structuring creativity in PHE without losing clarity or classroom management
- Moving from basic skill development to a collaborative performance task
Participants will leave with practical lesson structures, progression ideas, and teaching strategies they can immediately implement in their own programs to transform jump rope into a dynamic and meaningful PHE unit.
