From Ideas to Impact: Powering Sustainable Events
The session will present practical yet powerful approaches for schools to integrate environmental and social responsibility into event planning. The focus is on highlighting strategies that minimise ecological impact while also exploring avenues for events to generate positive outcomes for local and partner communities. The roles of staff, students, and the curriculum will all be explored in this context, as enthusiastic buy-in plays a crucial part in making a difference.
Presenter: Gavin Dinsdale, Head of High School Activities, UWCSEA East
Youth Game Changers: Curriculum and Pedagogical Strategies for Youth Leadership Through Sport
Schools within the Asia-Pacific region have a wealth of smart, talented, and passionate school-aged athletes. However, only a small percentage of these young people will realise their ambitions to compete in an Olympic, Paralympic or World Championship event. Nonetheless, their passion for sport, combined with their leadership and academic capacities, position them as key stakeholders in ensuring that sport for social good initiatives, such as the 2032 Legacy, achieve their aspirations for the broader community.
This workshop provides an overview of the leadership and pedagogical curriculum underpinning our UQ Youth Game Changers initiative. Developed in collaboration with Queensland schools, Youth Game Changers is an initiative of the Queensland Centre for Olympic and Paralympic Studies, The University of Queensland.
Youth Game Changers seeks to mitigate the impediment that “you cannot be what you cannot see.” The program facilitates students’ interaction with authentic, high-performing role models within the context of a purposeful, experiential event. Drawing on self-determination theory, YGC invests in students’ individual and collective potential for enacting advocacy and change within the context of sport for social good initiatives. Workshop participants will explore the entrepreneurial, leadership and pedagogical approaches of the YGC curriculum with a view to delivery within their own schools and/or participation in the UQ Youth Game Changers annual event.
Presenter: Louise McCuaig, Head of Discovery Institute and UQ Youth Game Changers Project Manager, Matthew Flinders Anglican College & University of Queensland
Injury Prevention and Return to Sports/Physical Activity
Let’s move! Participants will complete a multi-sport injury prevention workout designed for immediate implementation with student-athletes. The session includes a concise review and comparison of proven prevention programs, equipping coaches, athletic directors, and physical education teachers with evidence-based tools to reduce ankle and knee injuries in field and court sports, respond effectively when injuries occur, and support a safe return to play.
We will emphasize the importance of creating strong communication loops and building community partnerships to ensure coordinated injury management. The session also outlines best practices for guiding students through each stage of recovery—regaining function, returning to practice, and achieving full participation in sport. Participants will leave with actionable steps to enhance athlete safety and performance.
Presenter: Vernon Austin Bollinger, Physical Therapist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, The Clinic
Pathways to Passions
How do we design school activities programmes that don’t just offer opportunities, but actively help students discover what they love? This interactive workshop blends research and real-world practice, exploring:
• Robert Vallerand’s work on harmonious vs. obsessive passion
• Sir Ken Robinson’s Finding Your Element
• David Epstein’s Range on the power of breadth
• Alex Hutchinson’s perspective on the explore–exploit framework
• Gregor & Crystal Lim-Lange’s “Superhuman Skills”
We’ll unpack the balance between exploration and specialisation, and how to build transferable skills that serve students in any pursuit. Leave with practical tools to shape K–12 pathways that are intentional, flexible, and passion-friendly — so students can explore widely, specialise wisely, and thrive deeply.
Presenter: Ian Deeth, Head of Primary Activities, UWCSEA East
