The content of this session is founded on direct, practical experience gathered over several years while establishing the sports and recreation program at a Sino-American institution. It began not as a theoretical exercise but as a hands-on project, adapting to the nuanced demands of international education and cooperation. The program’s inception was informed by a synthesis of cross-cultural best practices, comprehensive internal assessments of student needs and interests, and stakeholders’ strategic objectives, rather than from traditional research or surveys.
Its relevance to physical education teachers, coaches, campus recreation professionals cannot be overstated. International collaboration in higher education is rapidly increasing, and with it, the need for adaptable models for student services, including athletics and recreation. This program serves as an illustrative model for other institutions navigating similar endeavors, or simply those looking to enhance their engagement strategies and expand recreation offerings within the diverse fabric of their student populations.
