Looking to add gymnastics to your K-5 curriculum? Interested in revisiting how you structure your gymnastics unit?
In this presentation, we will take a look at how we have integrated gymnastics into Shanghai American School’s K-5 PE program and increased student interest and participation in gymnastics-related activities. Please come to this session ready to participate in a sped-up version of our gymnastics unit. You will walk away with a basic framework for a gymnastics unit that can be completed in as little as 6 lessons.
We feel gymnastics is a critical part of an elementary PE curriculum, and whether or not you are experienced in this content area, this session aims to have you walk away confident in running a gymnastics unit.
Highlights of Unit:
- Student-Centered Assessment: The program culminates in a unique performance where students showcase their skills to families via Seesaw. This assessment not only includes a self-reflection piece but also emphasizes the importance of individual expression and creativity in gymnastics.
- Fostering Interest in Creative Movement: This 6-lesson gymnastics unit is part of our larger exploration into Creative Movement. Students will develop an interest and motivation in creative movements with the high level of voice and choice they experience during our gymnastics program.
- Enhancing Cooperative Skills: The program has a high emphasis on teamwork and cooperation, as students will frequently work together in pairs and small groups.
- Encouraging Creative Expression: Throughout the lessons, students will have opportunities to express themselves creatively in various ways, with many opportunities to share their ideas with their peers.
- Inclusive Learning Environment: We will discuss practical strategies for adapting strategies that ensure our students, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities, can participate and thrive.
