It is common for Physical Education curricula to be dominated by Eurocentric sports and western learning frameworks. These games and the way of teaching have their place, especially as many of the games have over time become internationally recognised sports with vocational opportunities for players, officials and administrators, as well as having recreational and informal sport in the community offerings. However, a curriculum with only these sports will miss a profound opportunity to foster cross-cultural connection, inclusivity, and in some contexts the need for reconciliation through connection to country. This practical, interactive, movement-based workshop invites you to “decolonise” your PE curriculum. You will participate in a selection of curated ‘traditional’ games, experiencing not just the rules but the histories, protocols, and cultural storytelling embedded within the games. Participants will leave with a ready-to-use compendium of games that promote movement literacy, sport literacy, and physical literacy. Come prepared to move, play, and possibly transform your physical education program.
