In today’s Physical Education programs, schools are increasingly looking for activities that are inclusive, engaging, skill-based, and capable of motivating students of all athletic backgrounds. Flag football is one of the fastest-growing school sports worldwide and offers a unique opportunity to modernize and diversify the PE curriculum while promoting teamwork, communication, fitness, and strategic thinking.
With over 12 years of experience playing and coaching American football internationally, alongside 7 years working in international school PE departments, I have seen firsthand how flag football can positively impact students’ confidence, participation, and overall enjoyment of physical activity. Unlike traditional tackle football, flag football is non-contact, accessible, and adaptable for mixed-gender participation, making it an ideal addition to a modern school environment.
Integrating flag football into the PE curriculum would not only introduce students to a globally growing sport, but also provide opportunities to develop transferable skills such as leadership, collaboration, spatial awareness, decision-making, and resilience. The sport can be taught progressively across different age groups and ability levels while aligning with broader educational goals related to physical literacy, student wellbeing, and lifelong participation in sport.
This presentation will explore the educational benefits of flag football, how it can be implemented successfully within a school setting, and the value it can bring to both students and the wider school community.
