Hard conversations are an unavoidable part of school sport, yet many coaches and educators are never explicitly trained in how to navigate them. From team selections and reduced playing time to parent concerns, injured athletes and behavioural issues, these moments can quickly become emotionally charged and difficult to manage.
This session explores practical frameworks and real-world strategies to help coaches and athletic leaders approach these conversations with clarity, confidence and care. Participants will examine common scenarios in school sport and unpack what effective communication looks like when emotions are high and relationships matter.
Through discussion, case studies and shared reflection, attendees will leave with simple, transferable conversation structures they can use immediately in their own context. The focus is on balancing honesty and empathy, maintaining high expectations, and strengthening relationships rather than avoiding difficult moments.
This session is ideal for PE teachers, coaches and athletic directors who want to feel more confident and consistent when navigating the human side of school sport.
