Early in the 2021 school year of Australian schooling, a groundswell of media attention resulted in calls for schools to address consent matters within the context of Respectful Relationships programs. The media attention was driven by young women who had been motivated to share their stories of harassment and assault on social media.
The Australian Government moved quickly in response, producing a much criticised suite of resources on a website bearing the title The Good Society.
This presentation offers an alternative, student-led strategy to the challenge of addressing young people’s understanding and enactment of respectful relationships. Drawing on contemporary HPE research, the presenter’s HPE department devised a unit of work that called on the students to create their own resource for social change. A focus of this presentation will be the barriers and enablers that influenced the design and implementation of this curriculum initiative.
