Before I was introduced to sail training as a young person, professional sailing was never on my radar. Sailing on a Challenge 72 for the first time was a life-changing opportunity for me that has allowed me the privilege of working with hundreds of young people throughout my career; and whether it be hoisting sails, crossing oceans or just cooking onboard, the personal resilience and development it promotes, remains. I have no doubt that the impact of sail training and experiential education surely leaves a legacy of engaged, ambitious and compassionate young people that will step forward to lead the next generation.”
Amelia will share her experience of discovering sailing as a young person and her journey to become a professional ocean sailing skipper. Highlight the key experiences and learnings that have had the greatest impact on Amelia’s career and personal development. Including her experience leading a team of 16 novice sailors on a race across the Atlantic Ocean, overcoming prejudice in a male-dominated industry and persevering through periods of mental and physical challenge. Now working at Outward Bound Hong Kong, Amelia will outline the sail training program that Outward Bound Hong Kong operates and describe the transformative impact that experiential education, through sailing, can have on young people, from diverse backgrounds.
