I became interested in the science of learning in the mid-to-late 1990s. At the time I was working in a low socio-economic status school with a majority of students with English as a second language, a large percentage of students with reading ages below their chronological age, and many students coming from homes with ‘social concerns’. Influential in helping me navigate the complexity of this school context was the book How People Learn: Brain, Mind Experience and School. The science of learning has continued to progress our knowledge about teaching for effective learning. Specific recommendations are now available to maximize learning efficiency and effectiveness based on solid evidence. In this presentation, I share how this applies to quality curriculum design and teaching in physical education.
