In 1993 Erindale College introduced the Talented Sports Program to support the growing needs of aspiring student athletes. The initial intake of 33 students has grown to 300 students and forms the cornerstone of enrollment in this Government College of 600 students in total.
Students interact with teachers and community coaches within the regular school timetable in the Sports Development course that contributes to the Senior Secondary (Year 12) Certificate. Regular lessons see students grouped into classes based on their passion/sport with regular class sessions around skill acquisition, game development, strength and conditioning, and athlete management topics. Students usually combine this course with 4 other courses to meet the needs of the Year 12 certification process.
The strength of the program is the provision of quality coaching and elite training facilities. The College is unique in that it has a commercial gym, The Active Leisure Centre, within the complex. This gym, including a pool, is accessible to all students and the public inside and outside of school hours.
The College has partnerships with local sporting clubs, including the Canberra Raiders, The Brumbies, Sydney FC, GWS Giants and the Tuggeranong Vikings. Teachers within the PE team are also involved in coaching within the community in numerous representative teams and academies.
The Erindale Talented Sports Program has seen students successfully transition into elite sporting opportunities in a variety of settings, including the Olympic Games, NRL, AFL, Super Rugby, the A and W League, and much more.
