The International Organization for Physical Education (AIESEP) supports that assessment should be an integral part of the instructional process rather than an add-on. AIESEP advocates for physical education (PE) teachers to develop methods that ensure that assessments in PE lessons are valid and feasible representations of intended learning outcomes, allowing for the periodic determination of students’ learning progress (AIESEP, 2020). This advocacy has led many PE teachers to explore integrating assessment into PE to enhance students’ learning experiences. Effective integration of formative assessment enables teachers to design differentiated, evidence-based practice tasks that optimize the learning environment and deliver individualized instruction based on students’ learning needs. However, challenges such as insufficient time for skill observation and cumbersome data collection processes can reduce learning time and hinder practical assessment. Hensley (1990) and Wood & Safrit (1990) highlight the need to simplify assessment delivery in PE.
This presentation will demonstrate how a technological solution can streamline data collection for assessment and increase the accessibility of collected data for teaching and learning. This approach enhances students’ ability to become self-directed learners and enables teachers to make more informed decisions for teaching and learning. The app’s customization features facilitate efficient data collection and analysis, addressing common challenges and improving the overall effectiveness of formative assessment in PE lessons.
