Breakout Sessions
Building a Robust Wellness Program: Lessons from International School Manila
At International School Manila, Wellness is not an add-on—it is a core part of our students’ learning journey. Our Grade 7 and Grade 8 students engage in a full year of Wellness programming, while Grades 5, 6, and 9 participate in semester-long courses. This structure is rare among international schools, and it reflects our deep commitment to supporting student health, well-being, and digital citizenship.
This session will provide insight into the systems and structures that make our program possible, the benefits of offering extended and sustained Wellness learning, and the challenges and sacrifices involved. We will share how our curriculum has evolved, why we believe this investment is essential, and how it has impacted student agency, belonging, and personal growth. Participants will walk away with practical ideas for designing, sequencing, and advocating for wellness programs that meet their students’ needs while advancing a whole-school vision for well-being.
Next Level Consent Education: Strategies for Enhanced Relevance, Transfer, and Application
Communicating consent is actually not as easy as tea, like the old comparison says, so join this session to consider ways to add depth and skill development to units focused on teaching consent. We will explore how skills such as analyzing influences and regulating emotions are integral to communicating consent by experiencing learning activities from a grade 8 unit: Communication Skills for Healthy Relationships and Sexual Health. Walk away from this workshop with a deeper understanding of the consent continuum, an updated resource bank, some ready-to-use learning activities, and ideas for developing a skills-based unit that is responsive to diverse, multilingual learners.
Beyond the Classroom: Engaging Families in Middle School Health
In this workshop, we will explore various strategies for engaging our students’ families to create strong partnerships. By working together with families, we can align health learning across home and school. Families are an integral factor in students’ well-being and a key source of information and influence.
Removing Bias in Health Education: Skillfully Using AI to Support Inclusive Learning
As an international educator, I’ve had the privilege of living and working in countries where Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam shape daily life. Experiencing these diverse cultures has deepened my understanding of how religion and cultural values influence students’ perspectives, especially in Health Education units on mental health, substance use, and sexual health. I’ve also learned, sometimes the hard way, how my own cultural assumptions can unintentionally shape my responses.
In this session, I will share practical strategies for reducing bias in the health classroom using AI tools, including a “School Sidekick”, a well-crafted AI assistant aligned to your curriculum and learning standards. You’ll learn how to design prompts and parameters that encourage curiosity, ensure safety, and foster culturally responsive dialogue. Whether navigating sensitive topics or building student confidence to ask difficult questions, you’ll leave with hands-on techniques for integrating AI in a way that enriches learning, provides accurate information, and honors diverse perspectives.
Within each of the four sessions there will be whole group collaboration and opportunities to split into smaller groups depending on the needs of participants by primary/secondary or other considerations.
