How can we better support students who struggle to learn badminton?
If you are familiar with Dr Tim Hopper’s 4R model for analysing game play—Read, Respond, React, Recover—you may have noticed that many novice players spend most of their time simply reacting to the shuttlecock. The shuttle often travels too quickly for them to effectively read the situation, make a decision, and execute an appropriate response.
What if we could slow down the flight of the shuttlecock, giving students more time to read, respond, and then react with the correct stroke and footwork?
In trials involving both primary and secondary students, the use of modified shuttlecocks resulted in noticeable improvements in performance after just a few minutes of practice. By slowing the game down, students were better able to perceive cues, make decisions, and experience success, leading to greater confidence and engagement.
In this session, participants will learn how to modify the design of a shuttlecock and explore the pedagogical scaffolds that complement its use. Together, these strategies can help teachers design badminton learning experiences that are more inclusive, developmentally appropriate, and engaging for all learners.
