Assessment Literacy is one of the six key areas of practice identified under the SkillsFuture for Educators. The Ministry of Education, Singapore, introduced the SkillsFuture for Educators in 2020 as a professional development roadmap for teachers to improve their competencies and encourage lifelong learning.
SkillsFuture is a national movement to provide Singaporeans with the opportunity to develop skills relevant to the future needs of the economy and society. Based on one’s strength and passion, it embodies the spirit of lifelong learning, celebrating the skills and growth of every individual, no matter their background, age or qualifications.
In schools, educators are encouraged to develop students’ ability to be self-directed learners by equipping them with the skills to be learners for life. How do we nurture our students to become self-directed and reflective learners through PE? How do we create a culture of thinking and learning? How do we develop character? How do we leverage technology to personalize learning and provide authentic learning experiences for our students?
So what does it mean for a PE Teacher to be assessment literate? To be assessment literate is to have necessary knowledge, skills and dispositions regarding the full array of assessment processes that will both monitor and promote our student’s mastery of the learning expectations. (Toh, P. G., & Leong, S. C. (2016).
In this practical-based workshop, two Singapore PE teachers will share how they design their lessons to nurture self-directed learners through practical strategies underpinned by assessment and feedback literacy. Practical Strategies include self & peer assessment tools, thinking routines, the use of rubrics, data collection as performance indicators, etc. Participants will be able to experience strategies and tools designed in schools that encourage students to play an active role in their learning.
