Meaningful PE is an approach to teaching and learning in physical education where the teacher uses the quality of the students’ experiences as the main filter for their pedagogical decision-making. Some suggest that Meaningful PE simply represents ‘good teaching’, however, in this presentation I will show that, while there are indeed many elements of good pedagogy in Meaningful PE, a key distinction lies in the explicit and intentional use of meaningful experiences to inform how teachers work with students. Through examples from practicing teachers, audience members will be shown that Meaningful PE tends to be best implemented when teachers: have a vision for teaching that carries elements tied to meaningful experiences for students; develop a shared language with students about the meaningfulness of their experiences; use democratic and reflective pedagogies to support the meaningfulness of students’ experiences, and; identify clear representations of meaningfulness in their local curriculum and policy documents.
