Physical Education (PE) plays a crucial role in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle that contributes to the overall well-being of our students. To maximize the benefits of PE lessons, it is essential to foster student engagement and motivation. Past research has shown that student voice, guided by the Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Ryan & Deci, 2017), correlates with higher levels of engagement and motivation in educational settings (Conner et al., 2022; Howely et al., 2021). However, limited studies have investigated the impact of incorporating student voice in PE (Howely et al., 2021). To address this gap, this research proposal aims to present an exploratory study that explores the potential of student voice to enhance the quality of learning in PE lessons.
The workshop aims to share the impact findings of practical strategies involving student voices on the affective learning outcomes in PE lessons. By implementing student voice pedagogies, the research seeks to shed light on how these strategies can be utilized to promote social and emotional learning and, subsequently, enhance the overall effectiveness of PE teachers in delivering meaningful and engaging lessons. We will also share the challenges and opportunities of these practical strategies involving student voice pedagogies (Howely et al., 2021) and actionable insights to enhance teachers’ effectiveness in PE lessons.
